Including Children with Down’s Syndrome

Chepstow Racecourse, Chepstow, Monmouthshire NP16 6BE

We are delighted to invite you to our 11th annual education conference on Monday 11th November entitled:

Including Children with Down’s Syndrome

This event has once again been organised by 21 Plus. The conference is suitable for all staff involved in teaching and supporting pupils with Down’s Syndrome in both mainstream and special educational settings at primary and secondary stages. It is relevant to speech therapists, educational psychologists and other professionals involved in planning and managing input to schools as well as to parents of children with Down’s Syndrome.

The day covers the learning profile associated with Down syndrome and specifically focusses on speech and language and the implications for developing literacy, differentiating the curriculum and supporting behaviour in Primary and Secondary school.  The morning will provide information on the strengths and challenges with speech, language and communication. We will then look at the importance of using this information to develop literacy skills and how to use literacy to support speech and language development.

The afternoon will look at considerations and strategies for differentiating across the curriculum and will include how to measure progress, develop effective assessment and ensure accurate record keeping. We will also look at the impact of speech and language on developing social strengths, friendships and behaviour. The session will provide practical examples and strategies of how to support these skills and manage these behaviours when they occur.

Our speakers are from from LETS Go! (Language, Education, Training, Speech – Go).
